In today’s world, you’d think we’d be past making snap judgments based on personal preferences—but surprisingly, many people still link interests like sports to someone’s sexuality. One classic example? The assumption that if a guy doesn’t like football, he must be gay.

Let’s set the record straight: not liking football has absolutely nothing to do with being gay.

Sexual orientation is about who you’re attracted to—emotionally, romantically, and physically. It’s not about whether you can name your favorite Premier League team or scream at the TV during a match. In fact, there are straight men who can’t stand football, and there are gay men who are die-hard fans. People are complex, and interests don’t define orientation.

So why do these stereotypes persist? It usually comes down to outdated gender norms and societal expectations. For decades, liking sports—especially football—has been labeled a “manly” trait, while disinterest in sports has wrongly been associated with being “less masculine.” This thinking is not only false but also harmful.
